Maths was Fine Until they Brought the Alphabet Into It: An Investigation of Junior Cert Student Knowledge of Initial Algebra MATHS WAS FINE UNTIL THEY BROUGHT THE ALPHABET INTO IT!

This workshop will share recent research in Irish post-primary mathematics education with a specific focus on initial algebra. The empirical evidence produced from this research will be shared which confirms previous information provided by teachers based on their own experience in the junior cycle classroom.
*Formative assessment – use of a screener to quickly profile students’ knowledge of initial algebra
*Identification of common student errors and misconceptions in the prerequisite content areas for success in initial algebra
*Presentation of results from the implementation of the screener to a large sample of second year students
*Reflection on these results and discussion as to how we can help students overcome their common errors and misconceptions.
*Try out the screener for yourself and join a follow-up session to discuss findings
