Oral language is the basis for reading and writing. Much research has shown that good oral language skills are essential for successful literacy.

This course aims to cover the following content tying in with the new Language Curriculum

    • Importance of oral work when writing
    • Vocabulary development (e.g. useful words and expressions, overused words, Words of the Day, homonyms/ synonyms/ antonyms…)
    • Creating character profiles, creating a language rich environment
    • Debates, Idioms and Tongue Twisters, Barrier game activities
    • Oral language games (e.g. category dice games, fun with grammar, use of photographs, countdown…)
    • ‘Talk & Discuss’ approach to oral language (e.g. object activities, ‘emotions’, talk activities, feely bag, newspaper headlines…)
    • Scenarios: Practice telephone scenarios, interview scenarios, presentation scenarios, develop presentation skills, create advertisements and link oral work to writing
    • How to communicate, questioning skills, strategies for small group work, station teaching & oral language

The resource Tip of the Tongue Oral Language and Vocabulary Development Box will be used in this course but it is not a necessity to purchase or already have this resource for the course content to be applied to classroom use. Tip of the Tongue can be viewed at www.cleverkids.ie

This course qualifies for the Department of Education & Skills EPV Days.
