Supporting Pupils who have been Bereaved

Teachers and school staff are uniquely positioned to support pupils who have lost someone they love. 28% of Irish 9-year olds have lost a grandparent, and 2.2% a parent, according to ESRI research. UK figures show that 70% of schools have a bereaved pupil on their roll book at all times. Without doubt, all teachers will encounter a child who has suffered a bereavement. Bereavement can impact hugely on the emotional and social well-being of children, and on their ability to concentrate and learn. School and its routine can provide stability, security and continuity for a child whose world has been turned upside down. Most grieving pupils do not need a bereavement expert, they need the support of people who care.
