This workshop is suitable for Junior and Senior Infant teachers, as well as teachers of children with EAL or SEN. It will explore relevant research and theory relating to the importance of play in child development and the associated benefits.Practical strategies to promote learning will be discussed, including effective differentiation, assessment and teaching of ‘core’ subjects (English, Gaeilge, Maths) through play.

Anticipated Learning Outcomes: 

  • To provide information about child development and the benefits of a play-based learning environment
  • To discuss approaches for promoting oral language and child-led learning

  • To explore behaviour management strategies and social / emotional learning

  • To discuss practical strategies to teach English, Gaeilge and Maths through play


  • Why play is key to children’s development in the early years, discussion of research and theories
  • How to promote oral language development using the new Primary Language Curriculum

  • What is child – led learning? How to plan for this and how to use differentiation effectively

  • Using the classroom environment as the ‘third teacher’

  • STEM learning through play and exploration
