Link to the play - Ghosts, Sausages & A Dining Room Table
To all teachers of senior primary school students:
This play can be used royalty free. It has been made available from December 10th, the actual day, 100 years ago, when WB Yeats received the Nobel medal in 1923. It's called Ghosts, Sausages & A Dining Room Table and is written by Eva Joyce, a young actor and playwright.
Please enjoy this short play, which tells the story of William Butler Yeats and George, his wife, as they prepare to travel to Stockholm in Sweden to collect the Nobel medal in 1923. Yeats became the first Irish person to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. For him and his wife, it was a long journey to undertake, but they were excited and believed it was important to be there in person to accept the prize.
We hope that you enjoy sharing the story with your students and that the play will help to explain the story of Ireland's national poet, as well as talking about poetry and, of course, the Nobel Prize itself.
This project has been funded by Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports & Media and curated by Yeats Society Sligo as the final part of the Official Decade of Centenarires 2012-2023.
